The Hijab

|

This is an interesting concept that I've heard before, with regards to the verses in the Quran, 24:31 and 33:59 seem to be the only two verses that address a woman's dress code, and neither of them really endorse the "hijab" as we know it today. People will also refer to the Hadith about a woman showing only her hands, feet and face, but that Hadith is classified as weak so take what you will from it. Now to be clear, I am a supporter of the hijab I think it's an amazing show of modesty and discipline in an increasingly immodest society, but I think it's important we evaluate why we practice our religion the way we do so that we may weed out the practices that are a result of cultural influence rather than true Islam. Let me know what you guys think.

Salam brother.
You are basically saying the hijab isn't fard. If it wasn't fard and was a "choice", do you really think most Muslim women would be wearing it in these modern times? Women are doing it because it CLEARLY states in the Quran that they must cover their heads. It's not an option. Of course, you could be a great muslim not wearing the hijab, but you are not doing what you are supposed to (Fard). It's not sunnah to wear it, it's fard.

You basically preached selectivity in Islam when you said that "[the Hijab] Hadith is classified as weak so take what you will from it.” " but that Hadith is classified as weak so take what you will from it". You can't take bits and pieces from the Quran and choose to follow only the things that sound okay to you. You can't eat halal but drink wine everyday.
If that hadith was really weak, then most scholars and imams would advise us that in these tough times, wearing the hijab wouldn't be the best idea. It would've been a choice. All scholars and imam's say wearing the hijab is fard.

“And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear therof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, or their brothers’ sons or their sisters’ sons, or their women or the servants whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex, and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O you Believers, turn you all together towards Allah, that you may attain Bliss.” (Quran 24:31).
This is in the Quran and it is fard. If it's a weak hadith, then it wouldn't be mentioned in the Quran. If it was a cultural influence, then it ALSO wouldn't be mentioned in the (holy) Quran.
